2016 may have been the year of “realizing stuff” (according to Kylie Jenner), while 2017 was a bit more chaotic, but we’re calling it early for 2018. This is the year of balance. Although easier said than done while juggling work, school, kids, and maintaining a social life, ENLIGHTENED is here to help. Implement these 7 tips into your everyday life to experience a more zen 2018.
Practice Yoga and/or Exercise
Exercise might help you look good, but most importantly it helps you feel good. No need to worry if you find the gym intimidating—you have tons of options when deciding how to get active. A great way to ease into exercising or tone your body is yoga. Yoga does more than just improve balance in a literal sense, as consistent practice encourages relaxation, combats depression, boosts immunity, and relieves aches and pains. If a gym membership doesn’t fall within your budget, plenty of yoga studios operate with “pay what you feel” entry. If you prefer remaining in the comfort of your own home, you can find countless online videos for any skill level.
Always have something to look forward to
Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is crucial. It’s admirable to work long hours and strive to grow in your field, just as long as you get enough “you time” too! Always having something to look forward to is a good way to incorporate the necessary balance between work and play. Planning vacations or weekend getaways are ideal, but when that’s not possible on a budget (or limited time off, let’s be real), even having something minor scheduled into your week, like catching a movie with friends or getting a much-needed manicure, can get the job done.
Keep your space clear
Clutter in the home and workspace tend to make you stressed and disorganized. Start small by making your bed before you head out for the day or doing your dishes immediately after using them. Once you conquer these small feats, clean out your closet and rid your home of the random objects that take up residence over time, like receipts from years past or charging cables from the iPhone 4 you had years ago.
Be productive during your commute
Your time is valuable, so don’t let it go to waste! Use the time spent on the train or in your car to better yourself. You might be surprised at just how much you can accomplish as those small increments of time add up. Get back into the habit of reading or keep your mind sharp by completing sudoku puzzles. If you drive to work, put on a podcast in place of the radio or listen to that new album you’ve been meaning to get around to.
Let the creative juices flow
Channel your inner Picasso and get creative. Studies show even something as simple as coloring can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Setting time aside to focus on the present and channel your energy in a creative way will allow you to naturally relax and re-center. So play some music and let yourself unwind. Who knows? You might even discover a talent you didn’t know you had.
Separate from the Screen
Due to sheer convenience, and okay, maybe a little dependence, our phones are basically glued to our hands. Set aside some time each day to spend away from the glowing screens. (Sleeping doesn’t count!)
Make Daily To-Do Lists
You don’t even need a planner, but bonus points if you have one! Just think about what you want to get done each day and keep it in your phone’s Notes. You’ll feel accomplished crossing something off your to-do list (or, even cuter, putting the check mark emoji next to it).
Balance can be achieved in even the most simple of acts. Whether it be spending time away from your phone or finally taking your roommate up on Yoga in the Park, you’ll feel accomplished and centered. We’ll even make it easy for you to get started:
