Meet the team behind ENLIGHTENED! Today we’re talking to Jen, our director of sales (East).
So, what do you do at ENLIGHTENED?
In a nutshell, I get our product on shelves and manage all of retailer partners on the East coast.
How did you find this job?
Oooh, great question. I had my first ENLIGHTENED Ice Cream Bar in 2013. (It was the Fudge Bar if anyone was curious) I was a diehard fan from the start. At the time, I was a student living in NYC, and ENLIGHTENED was just starting to hit shelves. (ShopRite was one of the only retailers to carry the line.) I would beg my mom to clear the ShopRite shelves before coming to visit me in NYC. When I said diehard, I meant it!
I was sitting in a biology class with my friend Joel (we were nerds that sang acapella together, naturally) and he turned to me and said, “Jen, you would LOVE this ice cream product. It’s high protein, low calorie…” at which point I cut him off because I obviously knew where this was going!
It turned out that Joel’s girlfriend, Lily, was the CEO’s sister! I freaked out, asking him if he could connect us because I wanted to do whatever I could to help out. I had already accepted a spot in my dream grad school program, but wanted to do something to counter my severe case of senioritis.
I began working at ENLIGHTENED when there were 3 people at the company, each wearing 100 hats. I did anything I could to help out–I knew nothing and was pretty much willing to do anything.
3 years later I’m still here, loving every day more than the last! (And yes, I wound up changing my career plan to stay on at ENLIGHTENED!)
What were you doing before you came here?
I was a student studying biology and chemistry. Nerd, remember?
How long have you lived in NYC?
It has been 7 years. I guess I’m almost a real New Yorker?
What’s the absolute best part of your job?
That’s honestly such a hard question to answer. I really love traveling around the country, meeting tons of new people and getting to share the ENLIGHTENED story.
If you were a Roasted Broad Bean Crisp flavor, which would you be?
What is the best New Year’s resolution you ever made?
Once I said I’d run a half marathon that year, and I did it that April!!
What are three things always on your desk at work?
My glasses, my zen garden, and the birthday card that everyone in the office made for me last year.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Greek salad, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), hummus/pita, and salmon. Basically a Greek food feast!
Uptown or downtown?
Running to the train in summer or trudging through the snow?
Running to the train in the summer for sure.
Book or magazine?
Pints or bars?
Stranger Things or Black Mirror?
Nickelodeon or Disney?
Bake it homemade or go to a shop?
Homemade, even if it doesn’t taste that great. It’s all about the process!
Happy hour drinks or $1 pizza?
$1 pizza all day every day.
