Every June, the LGBTQ community and its allies come together to celebrate love, diversity, and the legal, social, and political strides the LGBTQ community has made. Pride Month is the most colorful time of the year, as thousands dress up to march in parades, run in races, and participate in various events all across the world.
Though this time of the year is filled with joy and celebration, it is not all about parties and rainbows. Many LGBTQ individuals still experience personal and institutional discrimination, including a lack of access to jobs, education, housing, and social support. Thankfully, there are amazing organizations whose goal is to address these issues and help those in need.
The Ali Forney Center (AFC) is an organization based in our hometown, New York City. AFC focuses on supporting homeless LGBTQ youth in NYC by equipping them with tools and resources needed to escape the harms of homelessness and to live independently. AFC seeks to address the “epidemic of homelessness” among LGBTQ youth, who comprise up to a staggering 40% of the total homeless youth population in New York City.
AFC is named after Ali Forney, a gender-nonconforming teen who became homeless at the age of 13. Forney became a dedicated advocate for other homeless LGBTQ youth in New York City. Tragically, he was murdered in 1997 at age 22, but the legacy he left behind has helped many LGBTQ youth receive basic human needs, health and educational resources, and the support needed to help transform their lives for the better.
AFC provides a wide range of services to homeless LGBTQ youth for free. Some services include:
HIV counseling and testing
Support groups therapy
As a health food company, we value organizations that are dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of all people, especially those in serious need. We praise and support the mission of AFC and want to help them continue the great work they are doing for homeless LGBTQ youth in our city. For the month of June, ENLIGHTENED pledges to raise up to $5,000 for AFC.
