Ever wonder what a day in the life for an Accountant is like? Read on to find out what Elaine does in a typical day!
7am Wake Up: My alarm rings at 7am every day. It takes me 10 minutes to fully wake up while I am going through all the messages, personal emails, and social media updates I missed during my 8 hours of sleep. As soon as I get out of bed, I walk right to the kitchen for breakfast. I never leave my house without having breakfast. Carbs and coffee are forever the theme of my breakfast. The simplest breakfast is coffee with almond milk and toasted bread with butter.
7:30am Facetime with My Parents: I have been living away from home for 8 years (4 years in Beijing and 4 years in New York), so calling my parents is something I do every day. My parents live in South China. Living so far away from them makes me feel guilty because I am not able to take care of them and I think calling to let them know I am okay and to make sure they are okay is the least I can do for them.
8-8:30am Leave for Work: My call with my parents usually last 15-30 minutes. After that I clean up my breakfast mess and get ready for work. I usually leave between 8-8:30am, and get in between 9-9:30am. Like many New Yorkers, I do tons of things on my one hour commute—listen to music, podcasts (I just recently started listening to podcasts, and love them! Several of my coworkers have recommended “How I Built This.” It’s really interesting to know the stories and history behind brands that I use/consume in my daily life), read news, books, reply to urgent work emails, daydream, and of course people watch (there is always someone who deserves to be on the @subwaycreatures Instagram).
9:30am Check Email and Prioritize Work of the Day: Checking emails, calendars, and my to-do list is a good way to prioritize my work for the day. This is what I learned from my first supervisor. I’ve been working with Enlightened for almost two years, and I am very lucky to have witnessed our huge growth in the past two years. As the company grows, I am given a lot of opportunities to learn more about financial reporting. Currently, a lot of my time is spent with our operations team. Starting with the purchase of ingredients and moving all the way through products manufacturing, product storage, order fulfillment, and products return, operations is involved in every step. Since a big portion of financial data comes from operations, I’ve been working very closely with them. People joke about me being part of the operations team sometimes. I wouldn’t mind getting a desk in the operations office. 😉
1pm Lunch Walk: Although I pack my lunch, I always like to go for a walk with my supervisor, Gemma, when she gets her lunch. It’s a nice break for me because I enjoy having conversations with her and we talk about not just work, but also things in everyday life. A pretty frequent topic is her son Alade, whom I just recently made friends with. To me, Gemma is more than a supervisor, she is a friend who helps me grow a lot in work and in life.
4pm Snack and Tea Time: One of my favorite times during the day is when I sneak into the kitchen, look for healthy snack options, and chat with whoever is in the kitchen doing the same thing as me. I am very proud that so far I’ve talked to everyone in the company at my snack break in the kitchen. Topics vary from what we ate for lunch that day to the worst date we’ve ever been on.
6pm Leave for Kickboxing: Earlier this year, I moved to Jersey City where I found a lots of gyms near me. Among them, there is kickboxing gym. I tried it once just because it looked cool and I immediately fell in love. I learned a lot about self-defending, but it’s also a good way to end a stressful day from work.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my day as an accountant at Enlightened!
